How Roman numerals work

Roman numerals use seven letters — I, V, X, L, C, D, M — worth 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 500 and 1000. You read them left to right and add the values up. The one twist is subtraction: when a smaller letter sits just before a larger one, you subtract it. So IV is 5 − 1 = 4, and XC is 100 − 10 = 90.

The rules in short

Why there's no zero

The Roman system was built for counting and tallying, not arithmetic, so it never needed a symbol for zero. It also can't easily show fractions or very large numbers, which is why the world eventually switched to the Arabic numerals we use today. Standard Roman numerals top out at 3999 (MMMCMXCIX).

Where you still see them

Roman numerals live on in clock faces, book chapters, movie sequels, the Super Bowl, monarch and pope names (Elizabeth II, Louis XIV) and copyright years. That's why converting a year like 2024 → MMXXIV is one of the most common uses.

What is 2026 in Roman numerals?

MMXXVI — MM for 2000, XX for 20 and VI for 6.

What is 99 in Roman numerals?

XCIX — XC (90) plus IX (9). It is not IC: subtraction only works with I before V or X, X before L or C, and C before D or M.

What is 1999 in Roman numerals?

MCMXCIX — M (1000), CM (900), XC (90) and IX (9).

How do I write a number in Roman numerals?

Break the number into thousands, hundreds, tens and ones, then write each part with the biggest symbols first, using the subtractive pairs for 4s and 9s. For example 2024 = MM (2000) + XX (20) + IV (4) = MMXXIV. Enter any number above and the converter shows it instantly.

What is XIV in numbers?

XIV is 14: X (10) + IV (4). The IV is a subtractive pair meaning 5 − 1. Switch to "Roman → Number" above and type any numeral to decode it.

What is 2024 in Roman numerals?

2024 is MMXXIV — two M's for 2000, two X's for 20, and IV for 4. Years are the most common thing people convert.

Why is 4 written as IV and not IIII?

Roman numerals avoid repeating a symbol four times, so 4 uses the subtractive pair IV (5 − 1) instead of IIII. The same rule makes 9 into IX and 40 into XL. (Clock faces are a famous exception that use IIII for style.)

What is the largest Roman numeral?

In the standard system, 3999 is the largest, written MMMCMXCIX. Larger numbers historically used a bar over letters (a vinculum) to multiply by 1000, but that isn't part of the everyday set.
